Product Description
Combining legendary Denon design concepts along with European-engineered acoustical tuning, the DM-37S personal music system is the ideal choice for a compact music center that delivers a superb musical experience. The built-in CD player features precision Burr-Brown audiophile D/A converters, and features CD-R and CD-RW disc playback compatibility, along with MP3 and WMA playback capability. The DM-37S is fully prepared for portable audio players, and features a front panel USB connection port for MP3 players or USB drives. As with many other Denon models, the DM-37S is also equipped with iPod dock connectivity (optional ASD-1R/11R iPod docks). The powerful amplifier section features Denon's simple and straight circuit design philosophy, and includes a mono output for connection to an external subwoofer. The matching compact loudspeakers feature double layer inverted cone woofers and soft dome tweeters with extended high frequency response, and were co-developed with European acoustical engineers.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive   July 20, 2010

I've had this system now for just a week and I'm already impressed. It replaces a Yamaha micro system that I had for about a year and a half, but with which I had become disenchanted mostly because of the speakers --- they were amazing in their bass extension but were overwhelmed by complex classical music passages.

By comparison, the Denon units are heavier, which implies better design. The back end of the control unit, for instance, is heavier, which usually means a larger power transformer and therefore greater power handling, despite the continuous rms power stated. The speakers are heavier also, which implies larger magnet structures; a good thing. The remote control is simpler and much better thought out. With the Yamaha, for instance, I couldn't open the CD drawer without the unit automatically switching to that function --- an irritation, since I was usually listening to FM and just wanted to retrieve a CD I had listened to earlier.

The speakers, once properly set up, provide an amazingly wide sound stage (and I doubt mine are completely broken in yet). I have them on a living room wall that measures 16 ft., 7 in. long and, with the right recording, the sound stage is that wide --- instruments/singers can be heard at points all along that wall --- even though the speakers themselves are just 91 in. apart. I placed the speakers on stands with the tweeters level with my ears (in the listening position), and toed in so they're aimed just slightly away from my ears. The speaker's backs are a foot from the wall to prevent boominess and the system is centered on the wall. Ideal speaker spacing (their distance apart) is determined by an equilateral triangle, with the speakers forming the ends of one leg and the listening position the apex opposite that leg. The size of the triangle, then, will vary and usually depends on the distance away one sits (in the sweet spot or listening position). I should mention that this is the ideal set-up for best sound and, since I'm a live-alone bachelor, I could accomplish it without grief from others.

Oh, and this system retails for $100 less than my previous one. I think Denon has packed a lot of value into this little system for the price they're asking.

4 out of 5 stars Denon superior overall to the big Bose Wave   June 28, 2010

I was looking to match the performance of the big Bose acoustic wave system (without spending the Bose $1099). So this Denon system, at less than 40 percent of the Bose cost, was appealing. As it turns out, the Denon sound is markedly superior to the Bose, especially for classical music--more clarity, more oomph. I can hear orchestral lines on the Denon that got muddled on the Bose. The Denon CD player also seems more robust than the Bose, which has its finicky moments. The Denon doesn't look as good--I still prize the Bose as an aesthetic object--and it's much less convenient to move around (heavier, wires, etc.). But if you're only interested in the quality of sound reproduction, the Denon is a far better value--greater fidelity at a fraction of the cost.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for our listening.   May 3, 2010

This unit was researched on the web. We have owned another Denon system (heavy duty) for years. I tried this one and it is at the top of smaller systems that I have heard. The wide variety of formats allows us to play all of our music.

I had no problems with start up or using it in all modes excepting IPod, which I do not have.

The simple tone controls have remarkable control over the sound quality.

1 out of 5 stars Beware the Refurbished!   April 27, 2010

After a lot of research looking for an all-in-one system in a compact design that still offered quality sound and construction I settled on the Denon M37. The reviews were over-whelming positive. I found a refurbished model - from a Denon Authorized dealer, I believe it was, and thought I'd save a few bucks.

Well, I am very sorry I purchased this system. Fist the digital display went haywire; it shows a random jumble of letters/symbols/numbers so good luck figuring out which radio station you are listening to. The CD player does not work - or I should say works when it feels like it. I've had this problem in the past with old, cheap Sony's and is one reason I will not buy Sony anymore. I was very disappointed when this unit started to do it; basically it just will not read some discs sometimes; it does not matter what format the CD is, it is totally random.

Do NOT lose the remote control (or let your one year old hide it from you -- forever!) because you will never be able to reprogram the radio pre-sets, the clock, use the ipod/usb function...I know this is my own fault. But things get lost (and kids get ahold of them) and I wish these manufacturers would not put all the function in the remote and none on the unit itself.

Even short of me losing the remote, the faulty glitches in the CD player and the display are enough to make give this a one star. For the money I could have bought 2 Sony's, but instead I end up with a really expensive AM/FM radio. And since it was refurbished, the warranty is basically nothing. I have an authorized Denon dealer in town but they won't work on it; though they recommended someone he said it probably wasn't worth it.

5 out of 5 stars just right   April 7, 2010

I gave away my last shelf top system, and not a cheap one, because I just never used it. And the reason I never used it was the sound quality didn't hold a candle to my headphones. Now I can put music in the room instead of only my head and still enjoy it. Warm sound, with detail and separation. Nicely done, Denon.
